Russert, We Hardly Knew Ye
Tim Russert appeared on Imus just this week. Like two good friends they enjoy a classic exchange. Tim gets the better of Imus but what else is new?
Imus: I don’t think Senator Obama is going to pick me (as a running mate).
Russert: I’d love to see you in a pant suit!

Tim, Rest in peace. Good God! Life is short!
There really are no words….
Had stopped watching him due to the Imus affair, but had recently started back. I would plan my Sunday morning around Meet the Press. R.I.P. Tim!
During the troubles last summer Hannity asked Russert if he would appear on Imus? Russert replied “If he asked”. He was a good friend to Imus and I suspect on Monday we will find out how good a friend…
I have been reading some comments -tributes to Tim Russert on Michelle Malkin’s blog..a couple have really moved me. Remember Malkin is a conservative blog.
This is comment #42

This is such a huge loss for the profession known as journalism. His like will never be seen again. With a known political bent, Mr. Russert transcended bias and always was spot on with the topic and always treated his guests with respect without giving up integrity of thought.
I will miss him on MTP. May God bless and comfort his family, especially Big Russ.
I will be 58 this August. I will never be able to be the man he was. Rest well Tim Russert, you’re duty is done…. we’ll take the night watch now.
And this one, some elequent words from Malkin commentors.

For me, Tim Russert exemplified the thoughtful “loyal opposition” that all those in the fourth estate should strive to be. Americans won’t ever see eye to eye on all issues, but there should never be a question about a journalist (or a politician) being essentially FOR our country. With Mr. Russert, there never was.
God’s joy to him in heaven, and peace and comfort to his family still here on earth.
Ditto!!!
An honorable man has gone on to meet his maker. May he always have “Fair Winds and Following Seas” even in this final journey.

Its pretty amazing stuff. Russert has been a part of our lives for so long, he appeared on Imus before MSNBC. Just can’t imagine he is gone.
Malkin’s blog #72 I had not heard this story it is a wonderful recounting of Russert the family man. Timothy John Russert Tatoo You. This one got me weepy.

While driving I briefly caught Hannity’s radio show where he recounted Russert’s son Luke getting a tattoo. Hannity butchered the story. But here is the transcript from Hannity’s TV show:
RUSSERT: When I wrote “Big Russ” in May of 2004, at Thanksgiving, my dad hugged me and told me he loved me for the first time. He felt his life had been affirmed. He felt he was now able to communicate, in a word, because I had said in my book, “I wish to hell he’d tell me sometimes what I knew he felt.”
Christmas Eve, 2004, we went to midnight mass, came home and Luke was getting ready for bed. And my wife, Maureen, came running in and said, “You won’t believe it. He’s got a tattoo.” I said, “A tattoo? I talked to him about that, about the physical consequences. He promised he — Luke, get in here.” “No.” “What do you mean, no? Get in here. No, what — lift up your arm.”
Arms locked. “No.” I said, “Lift up your arm.” He lifts up his arm, and there in a little purple stencil print, TJR. My dad’s name is Timothy Joseph Russert. My name is Timothy John Russert. And he said, after I read your book, I always wanted you and grandpa on my side.
RUSSERT: And, man, I fell in the chair, sobbed uncontrollably. My wife’s crying. Luke’s crying. I said, “You know, this is the nicest tattoo I’ve ever seen, but don’t get another one, you little rascal.”
Seeing images of Tim played over and over on MSNBC, it’s hard to connect with the reality that he’s not really there…it will take some time to get our minds around that fact.
Imus led the way to forgiveness, even if not all of us had gotten “there” yet. For that I am grateful.
Having just returned from a pilgrimage to the seat of Rome, Tim could probably not have done any more as a practicing Catholic to assure a speedy-no-detours-trip to the Pearly Gates. That thought is comforting even if nothing else about this untimely death can be.
Forgiveness, growing up Irish forgive but never forget. I’m not convinced that Russert didn’t stick up for Imus, unfortunately even Russert couldn’t hold back the hordes.
I have been watching NBC and MSNBC. As much as I dislike Olbermann he did a masterful job of putting everything together.
Brian Williams devoted the entire evening news to Tim. And Andrea Mitchell (filling in for Chris Matthews) is doing a repeat of that same broadcast in a way.
At 10PM EDT there will be a special on either NBC or MSNBC.
Of all the weasels at that network. Imus chose the correct path. He invited Tim back. And “Fat Timmy” as he called him. Was a little hesitant at first. But finally just this week he sounded himself again. Comfortable with his being back with Imus.
I cannot imagine how Imus feels this evening. So many times we take things for granted. The Sun rising in the Morning. The Sun going down in the evening. But for a man so young (My age) to die with no warning is just unimaginable.
God bless “Tim Russert” and his family. I will miss you. My father will miss you. We all will miss you.
What a Happy Father’s day it will be for his Dad who he took care of “Big Russ”. Oh My Goodness.
Well said, Bruce, on behalf of us all…
I remember thinking Tim Russert coming back was Imus’s way of saying he wouldn’t be blacklisted but more then I would read about the heat Tim Russert would take for coming back on Imus, read Brian Maloney’s account he takes a shot at Tim and provides a link to MMFA. (I am not going to provide the link-Brian Maloney isn’t going to use Tim Russert for his axe to grind against Imus, this isn’t about Brian Maloney) I think Imus and Russert had made their minds up and came to an agreement. Myself I started to get used to Tim being on just like he always was and then when the “Shuster” incident happened and he went to bat for David Shuster, and saved his job, I thought Tim gets it, he won’t let the network (MSNBC) keep getting targeted. I can’t imagine how Tim’s friends feel like Imus if we are all shocked, think how they all must feel, they live in each other’s lives, we just watch and listen to them. The thing is I kind of looked at Imus as a sentinel at MSNBC, when he was on in the Morning, the Keeper of the Box. Now what is going to happen to NBC news and MSNBC, with Tim Russert gone? I think Tim Russert was looking out for both NBC and MSNBC, he kind of kept their wheels from leaving the pavement. I don’t think he is replacable.
(but the more I would read) I really need to edit myself better it has been a long day.
Ree, I think Russert went to bat for Imus. Things being what they were Russert wasn’t in a position to save Imus’ program.
I’m so glad Imus and Russert moved on. Listen to the last interview (above), its two friends talking about issues, life and kidding with each other.
ChannelXRFR,
I hope they do break the VP Picks on RFD in Tim Russert’s honor. I am glad Tim didn’t suffer, small mercys.
It’s like Imus saying he wanted to grab Tim by the neck. The Irish in me would have included that on top. Of course James Webb would have understood that as a term of endearment, which it was.
You and I know how much Imus enjoyed Tim Russert. Of all those who abandoned him during 2007. Tim had nothing to say directly.
We assumed by him having Gwen Ifill on April 15, 2007 he was compounding the situation. Like adding Salt to the wound.
Here is the YouTube Presentation Special.

We wish his Family all of our prayers. And this weekend celebrating Fathers day will be a sad one for all of us.
Thanks X for getting this up so quick and thanks Bruce for the BruceTube.
RIP — Tim Russert.
Just a quick (one handed
) note to say tomorrow at 9a.m.est there will be at gaping one hour hole hole in my week. There has been one in my heart since yesterday afternoon.
I’m glad Imus and Russert made their peace before this happened.
God Bless Tim Russert.
Good to “hear” you Donald however many hands. Hope you are recup’ing nicely.
Because of my location, got to know Russert before Imus, so Russert on Imus was a bonus! And got to see a whole different side of him on IITM. I will miss him as he was part of my every Sunday also. But it will also leave a big hole on IITM. The banter between the too was always such a treat.
My heart goes out especially to Luke. Having lost my father far too young, I know the awful pain and the void that can never be filled.
The Open is a welcome distraction on this weekend. Go Tiger!
mtnherbal
Thanks for the well wishes. Today was my first time “trying” to type for awhile… my wife pointed out to me a few seconds ago, that maybe, I should wait a while longer until I’m off of the “Meds” they have me on. Sorry for post 121. After I re read it…I now know what she means.
I sent a personal email to Bruce around the same time to thank him for sending the recaps of IITM to hear that I missed (imagine that…no RFD in the hospital… and there are still people saying we don’t need health care reform? LOL)…I hope the email I sent to Bruce doesn’t look like the link 121.
You are so right about Imus and his ability to bring out other aspects of people we normally see only one side of. Another reason I love Imus and his knack of conducting great interviews.
Time for a nap! Be well, all.
I hear you mtnherbal. A guy loosing his father in this way is devastating. It took me years before I stopped reaching for the phone for some advice, to share or just to talk. Can’t stop thinking about Luke

Just watched the netcast of today’s Meet The Press.
Ifill – what a horrid twit. It was so unnecessary in the context of the show and what was being discussed at the time to bring up the Imus event. She obviously did it on purpose.

I think the powers that be, will notice too. Ifill might have just cut off her nose to spite her face. This wasn’t the time, it wasn’t about “Ifill” This was about Tim Russert and his legacy his friends and associates opportunity to say good bye. This isn’t about her or Brian Maloney take a look at what he posted -radio equalizer.
And the way she said it, “That day Tim learned something….” All high and mighty-like. I’m so glad they didn’t let her get away with that crap! Thank God for Carville, Matlin (who was close to tears), and Barnicle! Dang, enough is enough! Someone needs to stand up to this PC Crap! It’s OVER! She needs to report on Rev. Wright and Rev Pfleger! A man has died and all she can talk about is Imus? I’m sure out of all of the years she has appeared on MTP, she could have talked about something else! Then they had the Imus clip ready and waiting! Why won’t they leave him alone?
Sorry for the vent, but this has gone on too far…..
Imus has to be “monitored”, we lose our show, but Sharpton can shakedown over 50 corporations????? What is wrong with this picture? Somebody help me out. Maybe I’m missing something.
Harley,
What is interesting is she is using something that isn’t factual to get attention and sympathy at a highly inappropriate time and she was told to stop spreading the story. ChannelX linked back to the blog on that subject here on this website, in the above thread. The thing is this is highly insensitive, borish & tasteless, and it appears as though Ifill, has no self control when it comes to promoting herself- projecting herself into a tribute for Tim Russert by his friends and associates to remember him and send their condolences to the Russert family. I don’t think it went unnoticed by the Powers that Be.
What make you so sure, Ree? Everybody hates Imus, what he did was so unforgivable. (Sarcasm off.)
Didn’t see Sharpton, Ifill, Jackson, etc. protesting this:
http://www.tmz.com/2008/06/13/r-kelly-not-guilty-urine-the-clear/
But, Imus is the scum of the Earth, never to be forgiven.
Harley
The weird thing about the R Kelly verdict, Geraldo had a segment -poking holes all through the evidence, that wasn’t allowed to be entered in this particular case. What the jury was allowed to consider and what wasn’t allowed in as evidence.
I’m on a vacation schedule…missing all the important stuff…but it sure sounds from what you all are saying that Gwen Ifill is one sick puppy…get the girl some help.
I was listening to Russert’s last IITM interview and Imus asked him about when the candidates will pick vice-presidential candidates and Russert said “We’ll break it right here on RFD.” and they both laughed. I heard it on last Friday too.
I got really upset.
And Ifill is a horrible, horrible racist bitch. There, I called her it. I despise her and everything she stands for. I hope Monica Crowley wipes the floor with her someday.
But, I did like it when Doris was coming out of the cake and Tim said “This’ll end up on Imus!” so someone there must have been in favor of him… hmm…
Yeah, I heard that too. Surprised they didn’t cut that out. It’s time to leave Imus alone. Wonder if the “monitors” are listening today? Tim gave $50,000 for the ranch. Guess Sharpton’s thinking he should have shaken Tim down before he died!
This sounds like a GREAT idea doesn’t it?

No more Ifill on TV
Good Morning, Bruce! Haven’t seen you around.
The Smithsonian of Imus over at http://www.donimus.org/ has some great links regarding Russert and Imus.
The imusonair stream is completely untenable this morning. For every ten seconds of broadcast, there’s about 25-30 seconds of “dead air.” It’s not picking up where it left off either, leaving huge gaps in communication. I’m visiting family in Colorado which meant I had to wake up very early and creep to a quiet place in the house so as not to disturb anyone. Very aggravating on this important post-Russert morning. I have to turn it off before I throw my laptop out the window.
Use WABC stream. Has been very good as of late.

HI Harley,
I just had too much going on this weekend to discuss much here.
Between Tim Russert passing and other projects have been kind of busy.
The link you posted about Ifill I just couldn’t help myself. What a disaster that would be if she were to be put on that show. That’s my opinion.
And frankly Al Sharpton shaking down big corporations for his NAN and the link regarding Kelly getting off, (You don’t want to see the comment I left on that one). Al Sharpton should be assasinated PERIOD.
Alive and well Harley. Glad to see you posting more here.

Why are any of us wasting our breath on this piece of crap? We all knew he was being supported by Big Business.
Haven’t seen him much on TV lately? Wonder why? Maybe because they all found out he is the phoney everyone thought Mr. Sharp-Tongue is and was.
Also because now he takes the back seat to Obama.
Go to the back of the Bus A.S. Before you get thrown under it.
There is a lot of detailed information on the Rev and NAN.
Corporations named include; Pepsico, General Motors, Forest City Ratner, MGM Mirage, American Honda, Chrysler, Colgate Palmolive, Macy’s, Wal-Mart, FedEx, Continental Airlines, Johnson & Johnson and Chase.
Details reported on include the amount paid for consulting, advising and donations, as well as the content of email correspondence. Wonder where it came from? Fed preparing for an indictment, perhaps?
I’ve listened to the Ifill thing again. My oh my what a crock of sh.. she is. She was soooooo smug about how she “taught Tim a lesson”. What a low life.
Below is my email to Ifill: I was too pissed to write it well.
It is beyond imagination that Ifill would use the occasion of Russerts death to bring up the Imus event of over a year ago. Just incredibly poor self-serving judgement. And to so smugly proclaim that she “taught Tim something”.
Ms. Ifill, I doubt that you taught Tim Russert anything and to claim that you did is the height of hubris.
You are the one who needs to investigate who is really a racist in this situation. What have you done for race relations other than badger Imus and bring it up on the occasion of Tim Russerts death. What you have done is nothing!
Can we spell ScumBunny?
Noticed she didn’t say what that “lesson” was. Imus said he watched the Russert retrospectives, so he got this first hand.
Imus is way to smart to immediately respond to this self promoting… Imus choose a more appropriate time and place for the response. He could start by asking why all the original reporting (ie Newsday and the New York Times) is are no longer available on the Internet.
ChannelXRFR,
Ifill knows and she couldn’t control her self serving nature, before I thought maybe she was just dim but more and more maybe there is something more going on with her? Intervention time with the network brass? They don’t want to pay another law suit out I am sure.
Imus took the high road today as I’m sure we all knew he would. Good job by all including Charles and Bernie and Lou who obviously are not Russert fans.
The difference between Imus and the Ifill creature is that she could not resist going the low road. Big surprise there.
Just speculating here.
What if the Corps were the source of the reporting on Boycott Bucks? Attorneys for Corps want to get out in front of an indictment positioning clients as “victims”. Those attorneys leak information that should have been made public through filings by NAN. With a very deft touch direct reporters to certain events to connect the dots.
Either way the Rev and his cronies have some ’splaining to do.
Hey Channel, do ya really think that this will stick? On the other hand, with Al causing traffic problems and threatening to disrupt the All Star Game with another protest, folks just got fed up with him. ‘Bout time someone stood up to him!
ChannelX,
There isn’t a date or an exact quote of course no context, So people just repeating hearsay? I am sure it is in an archive somewhere. I research alot so this is a little odd. As I recall the target of the Satire was the Reagan Administration…but that is just a vague memory so I could be wrong. I can pull up George Washington’s Papers from the Library of Congress but not this much hyped claim Ifill being called a cleaning lady the original? Oh well who cares it doesn’t mean much people believe what they want to believe.
More on Ifill………..

I’ve come t the conclusion that maybe an apology is due in the whole Ifill matter. I understand that Imus didn’t say it. and I also understand the context it was said, however a little apology goes a long long way. Tomorrow morning mus should suck it up and apologize. To cleaning ladies every where. How demeaning to b compared to that low rent self deluding, hypocritical, lazy lier. Hell I wouldn’t let her clean my worst enemies house.

This is a very good well written article I happen to agree with.
Yes, Tim Russert was good at what he did. He was not, however, an other wordly figure as NBC and MSNBC tried to portray.
My opinion on the state of news coverage today given the fact these god awful cable news channels have nothing better to do.
http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/entertainment_tv_tvblog/2008/06/lessons-of-the.html
Whether it was ever actually said or not, the Cleaning Lady label fits Gwen Ifill perfectly — not because she’s black, but because she’s frumpy and always has been. There are plenty of exquisitely beautiful and SMART black female commentators, news anchors, and media spokeswomen. Any gal can get a make-over and be as glamorous as she wants to be…Gwen just didn’t and isn’t. Quit making that about race and someone else’s fault, Gwen — it’s your own choice.
Skiwolf,
Maybe it was over indulgence on the Media’s part but for people who had a habit of watching or listening to Tim Russert it was a (C)omfort. I hope some of his Wake is Covered, this is the part where people get to tell their favorite storys and offer their final thoughts and good byes. You know people were assembled very fast it was so unexpected, I think they did a good job without warning, now they can have a moment of peace to reflect on his passing and what Tim Russert meant to them personally. Tim and Maureen Russert turned out a fine man in their son Luke. I am so glad he went and got his father’s chair, that made me weepy.
PT, I wondered where you were, missed you I am glad to see you back. Have you heard from Lenny?
Frec,
Once upon a time, far far away in another galaxy, I suspect a man did Gwen Ifill wrong and since that time every man since has been made to pay for any real or imagined slight. Obviously she can’t forgive or forget, she appears to be in the gotcha mode: I taught Tim Russert a lesson? Really she believes that, is that like when Hillary Clinton was dodging sniper fire in Tusla? You know you repeat a story enough times you start believing it’s true
I think I would like to get past Gwen Ifill’s nursing old grudges she may not forgive Imus but I am up for forgiving her it doesn’t do any good holding on to petty slights it takes away too much energy, that could be put to productive use.
Imus should have Sister Louise on, talk about needing to hear some good news.
Ifill is as evil as HRC. Maybe even more so IMO.
Laree,
Read the article. Guy makes some good points about media coverage about Russert vs. what is going on in Iowa and other parts of the world. He was one guy — not a God.
Skiwolf
I don’t have a problem with the Russert coverage, the man was everywhere on NBC and MSNBC. I think the void he leaves behind might be too big for them to fill, even with Ifill shoveling Big Grin. I would just forgive and forget about Ifill, she won’t be expecting that
I pointed out to my daughter when she was growing up, there were going to be times she was going to have to fight but that she should pick her fights carefully, some are not worth winning. Ifill isn’t going to put herself in legal jeopardy would she? I would just ignore her negative behavior, she thrives on negative attention apparently.
It is like a tug of war, Ifill et al on oneside, Imus and all of us supporters on the other, the easiest way to win a tug of war is to drop your end.

On the subject of “the supposed remark” that Imus was to have made referring to Gwen Ifill as “a cleaning lady”…
The story of that remark can be originally traced directly to Gwen Ifill herself. Ifill made the claim that columnist Lars-Eric Nelson (now deceased) had personally told her that Imus had supposedly made the remark. No one else has ever come forward to substantiate that the remark had ever been made, except (as provided by Ifill) Lars-Eric Nelson to Ifill.
Imus was supposedly to have made this remark when Ifill was covering the Clinton’s, around the time of 1972.
Lars-Eric Nelson died November 21, 2000.
Lars-Eric Nelson is the ONLY person that can substantiate Ifills’ story, and no one since has come forward to back that story up…except, of course, Ifill.
My reply to Harley’s Link from BuzzFlash.
NBC will never be watched again on Sunday Morning if they put either Ifill or Olbermann in that chair
It’s interesting also, to watch the rerun of this past Sundays “Meet The Press” when Ifill HAD to re-interject that discussion on Imus in the middle of Tim Russerts rememberence.
Watching (again) from the moment she brought the subject up…the whole room fell silent, eerily so…and the look on the other guests faces looked like they were in total disbelief.
It was at that point that Mike Barnicle (bless him) and James Carville (bless him too) told Ifill that some things are more important than others…and one of them was LOYALTY. They really put the brakes one what (after re watching the incident) was a very tense (and on Ifills part, tasteless) segment of the show.
Bruce…
My wife and I were discussing who could possibly take on the task of being the new host of Meet The Press.
I was surprised when she said (before I could ever get the name out of my mouth)…Chuck Todd.
He reminds me of a young Russert, is savvy on politics and an awesome political analyst. His weak points: conducting the type of interviews that Russert was so well at doing. Chuck Todd, so far as I know, has never been in the position of doing interviews, but he does have the political chops and is extremely balanced and fair.
Olberman? Ifill?
They are legends in their own minds…and unqualified in all aspects.
My first thought was Jeff Greenfield, I mentioned that on Chickaboomer but would Greenfield want to leave CBS for NBC. It seems to me that CBS is less dysfunctional.
I’m still alive! :O
I’ve been reading all the time but usually off my iphone and don’t really like to type here on it because I can’t correct myself as easily.

Reality hits when you see his casket. Tim will be missed.
This is a sad day for all of us. As we look back at the truly short life of Tim Russert we really are in awe of such a man.
In life Tim was not only a commentator, but he was an unbiased reporter on Politics.
Was a true friend to Don Imus. And was a man when watched on Sunday was like watching a person you knew like a brother, Father or just a friend.
The charities he contributed to goes without fanfare. But was very active in that endeavor.
There truly is no replacement for Mr. Russert. Though NBC will try. No one can fill his shoes. And Ifill is the last choice on the list in my opinion.
God Bless this Man and his family. Including Big Russ.

Re: Tim’s replacement on Meet the Press – young Chuck Todd would do nicely. He is fair & balanced in his reporting & he seems just like Sgt. Joe Friday – ‘Just the facts’. I’ve been watching him closely this Political season & have not seen a bias. He could easily go on for Tim. Re: Ifil she is odious. Has an odious ego. As Imus might say ’she’s AWFUL!’ Sheesh! Inserting her Ifil/Imus into Tim’s memory moment was awful. Wish there ‘Shuuuuuuuuuuutup’ button was there. P.S. Glad you’re mending well Donaldinks – I-Fan.
Harley, “Ms. Ifill speaks” reads like a cover letter when applying for a position. Tim is not even in the ground yet. Thank God Luke grabbed the chair before she could sit in it.
ChannelXRFR,
What about that article had anything to do with just paying respects to Tim Russert – none of it was about Russert except how he related to her and her agenda? Icky, Yucky, Tasteless for goodness sakes the Man’s Memorial is today. It is almost like NBCU is trying to drive their audience away.
I found the only Coldplay song I ever enjoyed. Not suprizingly it is titled “Yellow” I guess you could expect the sentiment “The world should get to vote for the President of the USA” from a man who named his daughter Apple, I guess she is lucky he didn’t name her Bannana or Orange.

Very nice article. Sorry that you are not getting the Meet the Press Position. “In a Statement from NBC they stated NBC wanted to keep viewers watching”.
Good Luck in the Future
Big argument about drilling in Anwar, Cindy McCain forget the cookie recipe scandal. This is the recipe you want on your website.

Did anyone who listened on ImusOnAir or WABC’s feed hear the Clinton skit? Were there drop outs or was he censored?
Occured around the 8:38 EDT mark.
I have many blank spots in his skit.
Just asking.
Bruce,
I watched it on RFD TV it was funny.
Mine dropped out too, Bruce. Were they trying to censor us? By the way, Bruce you crack me up re: comments #102 and #104!
This isn’t a radio contest but it should be 77WABC/ IITM should get on board with something similar to pick my sidekick, Nov 2008. You didn’t pick the winners but maybe you could pick the runner ups. I would offer Gasoline Cards as the Prize talk about generating alot of people listening to 77WABC. Imus in the Morning “filler up”

WTF?????
Bruce, I heard the entire skit on WABC. Did not notice any problems. I heard the one where Imus told him to start over and to not pretend to be drunk. Frankly, it was not one of the better ones so if you lose it no big deal. Wasn’t all that funny.
Why couldn’t Imus apologize?
