POLITICO Double Covers McCain Appearance
Back on Imus, McCain sticks up for Palin spears critics
By: Jonathan Martin, POLITICO
It was just like old times this morning, as John McCain called into Don Imus’s show to mix it up.
Imus didn’t press McCain like he has at times in the past, but the crusty talk show host did manage to elicit the feisty and sarcastic side of the GOP nominee. Read|More

McCain had a long, process-oriented interview with Don Imus this morning, worth a listen, including Imus’s gripe about Obama’s relative treatment of his own nearly career-ending, racially charged joke and of Jeremiah Wright. Read|More

Check the comments on the Hot Air Post about Imus interviewing McCain this morning. There are people who think that Imus was pitching softballs they blame McCain for not exploiting Imus’s questions.
It would be nice if Sarah Palin went on next I am sure she would be a big hit with the RFD TV folks.

AP tied in the polls.
Well, I have to say it…Imus did me proud this morning.
McCain didn’t fair so well. McCain truly sounded clueless.
“I was sitting on a deck of an airplane…” ???
Good job, Iman!
Donald, neither one did me proud. Imus had his stupid “gotcha” questions and McCain had his talking points. I thought the whole thing was pretty lame.
Ree:
From your post on the last thread:
“I don’t know what Imus’s ratings are for RFD TV but he says all the time, they are large and better then when he was on MSNBC.”
Forget about “how many homes RFD is reaching”. It’s how many are watching.
The radio and affiliates reach many areas also…hard numbers on listeners (and viewers) is what matters.
Ski:
I will give you that Imus DID in fact ask the so called “gotcha questions”…and those “gotcha questions” are what gets the media attention. At least he didn’t “roll over…and fawn all over him”.
As for McCain, again excellent point about McCain’s responses…”talking points, and no “substance”.
In that view…it was indeed “pretty lame”.
However, Donald. Your guy is not better, which was kind of my point about the whole deal. They both pander to their “handlers” which I find so annoying.
Donald Inks,
That is what I meant, I don’t know, I can’t find numbers. I can only repeat what Imus states, he said, his ratings were better then when he was at MSNBC, more viewers. I posted the link to where RFD TV cites Neilsen numbers, up 6X from year before, it is the link for the Verizon Fios contract. That is referring to ratings, not households RFD TV can reach. I do think Imus has a large audience RFD TV and Radio. I was reading, trying to find the network and ratings, and people are comparing it to the old TNN -Nashville Channel, that is now branded Spike.
If Imus had numbers on RFDTV there would be advertising.
There is none. Although this morning I did see one for a thing
that you plug into your outlet to get rid of bugs.
I think it was called Ridex. I’m sure you can Google it.
I thought McCain and Imus both came out alright, both got what they needed out of today.
For 12 or so minutes McCain got to talk to a familiar audience. Like it or not talking points is what you get at this point in a campaign, stay on message. The campaign has the polls they have an idea as to what is working.
Imus interviewed a presidential candidate, he was a player again. As he has said, the show is not back 100%. Most likely the closer you get the harder it is to close that last 20% or so. Today was a step forward for Imus.
X, I could not disagree more. Imus did the gotcha thing and McCain did the talking points thing. Neither one comported himself well.
Imus will never be what he was. Part of that is age, a natural thing that happens. Listening to him on Cavuto, frankly he sounds old. Sadly, in today’s world that doesn’t cut it.
skiwolf RFD TV is more like PBS they don’t have advertising either well I have seen where some of the big oil companys sponsor some of the shows on PBS. I have not watched PBS lately they have an annual pledge drive- no adveritizing.
This is a percentage of ratings increase from RFD TV’s Web page. This is pre the Verizon Fios Agreement that adds something like 13 states. The link,

RFD-TV’S Nielsen Ratings Demonstrate Viewership Growth
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Nashville, TN — May 17, 2008 — RFD-TV, LLC announces today that Nielsen Media Research (Nielsen TAR) data from Des Moines, Iowa, the first DMA to carry RFD-TV on both cable and DBS, demonstrated exceptional primetime viewership growth from February 2007 to February 2008 (+67% year-to-year). RFD-TV meets or beats the Primetime Household viewership of at least 28 other major national cable television networks (Des Moines, Nielsen TAR, Feb 08).
“This research strongly confirms RFD-TV’s growing strength and viewer loyalty,” said Dan Kripke, Director of Sales for RFD-TV. “When RFD-TV is an option, even when ‘pitted against’ some of cable television’s highest recognized networks; viewers are choosing RFD-TV.”
RFD-TV features a well-balanced variety of programming that serves the interests and needs of rural America. Within the past year, RFD-TV added Ralph Emery “Live,” the new Crook & Chase Show and Imus in the Morning.

This is what I was reading about it being the old TNN format. TNN re branded it is “Spike” now.
There must be some advertising and some public funding…as far as can gather from reading about the network.
Rural News On Tap at RFD-TV
by Kent Gibbons — Multichannel News, 4/14/2008
New York— RFD-TV has new programming plans that include a musical show hosted by Levon Helm and a news operation with bureaus in Chicago, Washington, D.C., and São Paulo, Brazil, its founder said.
President Patrick Gottsch said in an interview last week his rural-lifestyle network will keep spending on original programming, after committing $25 million to a five-year deal simulcasting Don Imus’s New York-based radio show.
Gottsch sees Imus in the Morning, launched in December, as a vehicle to get launched on urban cable systems, and credits Imus partly for Comcast’s signing a corporate deal in January that led to a March digital launch in Nashville, RFD-TV’s home base. In about 32 million homes now, Gottsch predicts RFD-TV will have 40 million subscribers by next January.
RFD-TV’s biggest show, though, is the revived weekly musical variety hour The Crook & Chase Show, a former staple of The Nashville Network, whose changeover to Spike TV Gottsch frequently says created a void.
He said he recently visited Helm — the longtime drummer and singer in The Band — at the Woodstock, N.Y., studio where Helm has hosted musical get-togethers called “Midnight Rambles” since regaining his voice after throat-cancer treatments. Helm’s lining up guests for an RFD-TV show expected to start taping in July for a September launch, Gottsch said.
The news operation (scheduled to launch Aug. 1) will target issues important to rural communities, Gottsch said. Financial reports, for example, will cover underserved commodities markets.
RFD-TV is prepared to spend $25 million on the news operation, he said, including a rural version of CNN’s Larry King Live.
The rural economy, built around agriculture, is quite healthy, Gottsch said, with prices high for crops and livestock. That’s good for RFD-TV’s audience (he said the network has been rated by Nielsen Media Research since January) and for advertisers like John Deere and Ralston-Purina.

It would be really cool when Patrick launches that news operation. Looking forward to it, you betcha!
I just caught Imus on Neil Cavuto, FBN. We “All” need to email Fox News, a new head shot of Imus

Oh for Gawd sakes Ree. New Data from Des Moines?
PBS we watch all the time. We even donate. I’m not sure how much RFDTV gets in donations, but I’m pretty sure it’s zero.
The point is not how much advertising RFDTV has. The point is how much advertising IITM has on RFDTV. Zero!
Skiwolf
I am not an expert on RFD TV, I just posted what I found.
I’m sorry but when I think of ” Rural News”, and I don’t mean to sound like an arugula chomping soy chai chugging elitist, but I think Les Nessman, five-time winner of the fictitious Ohio radio news trophy, the “Buckeye Newshawk Award,” the coveted “Silver Sow Award” (for excellence in farm news, particularly hog reports), and the “Copper Cob Award”
Patrick should get him to anchor the first one.
Chanx – thanx for the link to Cavuto. Imus and Cavuto stated very well what happened in the interview. IMO, Imus asked the good questions, gave McCain a chance, but McCain wasn’t listening. Imus’s point that Mac has sold his soul to the devil (Cindy’s idea?) is well taken. He was on the defense; couldn’t see the forest for the trees.
‘Have always been a firm believer in “riding the horse that brung you.” JM would have done well to do so.
To hell with the conservative base. Who are they gonna vote for, Barr? Mac should have remained true to his roots. He won the nomination as a moderate. He HAS crossed the aisle. The country is screaming for a greening cleaning of Washington.
Ski…we usually agree, but am opposing you on this. The country is aging. We boomers are creating a different demographic. The Iman is ahead of the curve. IF Obama is elected, Imus has now long been having the discussion. He features T. Boone – ENERGY! “They” (the Imuses) are fanatic about ecology, violating nature, the temple of the body, healthcare. Agree Fox Biz might have been a better venue, if nothing else to compete with Joe who has stolen the concept and the guests. But I have faith…..what goes around comes around. I think he is doing what he wants to do…..can’t think of a better way to go out and I believe the program will resonate. As Cavuto said, he is a great interviewer. Build it and they will come.
Long post. Have been saving up for an Imus topic and made a list of trite sayings to see how many could use at once. Thank you guys for a continuing great intellectual discussion, wonderful website and fabulous humor.
mtnherbal, I agree with you somewhat. However I do not believe what Imus said with his interview with John McCain is exactly how he portrayed it on Fox News with Neil Cavuto.
Imus is losing his way in this situation. John McCain was not Grumpy. He was not defensive. He did not answer some questions that’s all.
And Imus has that quote from McCain incorrect. I cannot find it in my archives, but it was more like “Obama is an American and people should not be afraid of this Family Man.
The disaster will be if Obama/Biden are elected. And Imus is not helping by downing Palin or McCain.
I have an edited video of that interview with Neil Cavuto with some editorial graphics.
As a staunch supporter of Imus I believe he is losing his audience by being a flip-flopper. And you would never have heard that from my lips right after April 2007.
This is my opinion and in no way am I disparaging a wonderful comment by you.
mntherbal,
Sometime back when John McCain chose Gov Sarah Palin, they were looking at Barack Obama’s organization on the ground, they know that is the challenge. John McCain’s team not taking full advantage of the Media, that is not hostile to John McCain, like Imus. I agree with both Imus and Goodwin, this morning if these folks he took on to Win, are not getting the job done maybe he needs to crack the whip? I don’t think it was Cindy McCain, who advised picking these people up but probably the RNC. John McCain can’t win on defense, he needs to be on offense.
This is pretty much it in a nutshell, (The Palin effect) the Average Joe, Sixpack or Plumber, knows when “their supposed betters” are being condescending. I don’t think it is helpful to alienate wide swathes of viewing and voting public.
When this election is over, whoever gets elected, this country needs to come back together.

Imus returns to the Washington Post! Guess what ~ Now that Imus is on the right side of an issue for the Post he is no longer a “Shock Jock” he is a “Radio Talk Show Host”!
Went back and listened to the McCain interview and am simply amazed at the way Imus is playing this back focusing on the Palin comment and just beating it into the ground. This kind of behavior that makes Senators and others very wary of Imus and keeps them away.
Imus is beginning to Lose His Listenership? In my Opinion
From Fox News with Neil Cavuto.

Another weasel comes crawling back this morning. Almost fell out of my chair when Brian Williams called in professing to have had only an “old number” when he tried to reach Imus. HA!! I don’t think Imus is losing any viewers, Bruce. Even the people who criticize his new show apparently watch/listen enough to keep the critique going. I agree with mtnherbal. I much prefer the new subjects to the old one. This is a new day and Don Imus will live it his way, leaving us to ponder what the devil he is up to. Unlike McCain, he hasn’t sold out. He chooses to “STAND UP LIKE A MAN!’
texasgirl
That was not THE Brian Williams from NBC.
I do believe Imus has sold out. His show is nothing like the former show which I thoroughly enjoyed. Sorry to say, but its jmo.
Goiman,
He surely fooled me. Brian Williams pic, sounded like Brian, and Imus snapped his head off at end. Hmmmmmm…..
It was Brian Williams. At least in the shows present state (getting awful), he would never buy into an impostor calling the program.
OK, so imagine it for a second: Obama wins. Yay! The nation rejoices. Celebrations in the streets.
And then? After a few days of celebration, we get down to the enormous task of getting our country back on track. We’ve got big things to do—a climate crisis to stop, a war to end, a health care system to overhaul.
The single biggest obstacle to making those things happen will be obstructionist Republicans in the Senate. We need to kick them out. And we can.
The election is 12 days away, folks. This is no time to hold back. If we want to make really big change, we need to win every last Senate race we can. And our money now can mean the difference between victory and defeat. Can you chip in $25?
We don’t want to wake up after Election Day and think we didn’t do enough.
The writing is already on the wall: We have seen over and over again over the last two years how a minority of Republicans in Congress can bring legislation to a screeching halt. That is exactly what will happen if Barack Obama wins and we have failed to build a bigger majority in Congress.
The election is razor-close but conservatives and Big Business are already plotting on how to undermine Barack Obama after Election Day. Their key strategy is to cut down on Democratic wins in the U.S. Senate now…before Election Day.
You can see it in how their groups are spending money. Conservative and business groups are spending more money in Senate races than they are to defeat Barack Obama.
Our answer is simple: we’ll beat back their corporate power with some people power. If the 2008 election has proven anything it’s that the power of millions of people connected over the Internet can make a difference. Please chip in today:
Are these people from Moveon.org kidding me? This is ridiculous.
I’ve always had a curiosity about where phrases come from. So I finally got around to learning about, “gird you loins”. Turns out it actually kind kind of means to hold your pants up LOL.
This is actually pretty interesting:
1 Kings 18:45-46 (King James Version)
King James Version (KJV)
45 And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.
46 And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

I’m sick to death of the bullshit about who are “Real Americans” and who are not.
It smacks of McCarthyism.
Been there and done that.
Add ” America: love it or leave it”.
Fast forward to “Either or with us and against us ” crap.
We are all Americans, with different points of view.
After the Hoover years of the F.B.I., then the Viet Nam era, where people with different points of view were vilified, had dossiers secretly put together, had their phones tapped…
…”Real America?”
These days are no different, given wacknuts such as Nancy Pfotenhauer, and more prominently, Representative Bachmann from Minnesota (who by the way…is getting her own well self just deserves…).
These people, obviously don’t represent America well, rather…show their ignorance and prejudices on a level that hasn’t been seen on the national stage for quite some time.
I say: Good! The more they speak, the more damage they do to themselves…and any “credibility” they might have garnered is now in the “ash can” of American landfills, where it belongs. It’s refreshing, yet repugnant, watching people like this reveal their true nature…and “Real Americans” can take their pick. So far, I am buoyed by the majority of Americans that have stood up…and are sending them back to whatever “real America” they reside, whether it be geological, or just in their own minds.
It must be nice?
correction:
“Fast forward to “Either your with us or against us ” crap.”
From your link, Bruce:
“The cell phone of choice in the House is currently the BlackBerry, with nearly 8,200 in active use.
If the CAO decides to offer members the option of using the iPhone, BlackBerrys are likely to remain the primary tool of communication on the Hill. If lawmakers opt for the iPhone over the BlackBerry, they will be required to pay for it out of the Member’s Representational Allowance.”
Well, hell…it’s their ” Allowance”, right?
McCain closes to within 1 point! Gaining support from middle- and working- class voters as well as Catholics..
Exactly how I feel, donaldinks. The light of this election has really got the roaches on the run. Frec, A very interesting listen to N.P.R. But it really has nothing to do with Senator McCain presently. But most informative.
And Donald, Congress is the only group that votes in their own raises. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could do that in our own jobs?
Whether they pay for I-Phones out of their own pocket seems like a double edged sword. Given the allowance they receive how hard would that be?
This is a moot point which has no bearing on the power that Congress has with our, the taxpayers money. Most of these Senators and House Members wouldn’t even know how to operate them.
anyone know why no imus on RFD-TV this morning?
Does anyone know why Imus is not on RFD today?

Imus is still doing Promo’s for RFDTV on the radio. Only thing I can figure is the coverage of FFA convention Imus has been talking about. A little bit ago they were running the ranch special. Before that some horse thing or another.

Let me read the article and get back to you. We were having a discussion on “Rattler Gator” about bi racial roots, interestingly it is viewed differently from each side. Example how Black people look at bi racial folks, and how White people look at bi racial folks. That is an over simplification but you get the idea.
I was watching Fox & Friends this morning, they had Rush Limbaugh on discussing why the polls are reflecting the reality of the actual race right now….why they are tightening.
djtr – sorry, I missed “dupe post” and you can’t be as old as I! Even StDoms ain’t that old! Do remember the Coke deal…but they were in little bottles with green writing.

I am not finished but they are bringing up that they believe there are blood ties. Which have not been explored. A DNA test today, from the Male McCains on one side, and the Male McCains on the other side, would easily clear that up for them. They obviously share a history together.

If you can’t get enough of Karith (Gag), listen to Curtis Sliwa on WABC so you can hear her do weight loss commercials for some diet drug. Pretty funny.
I really thought it was the real Brian Williams. Imus sounded sorta stunned at first and then at the end he really bitch slapped him.
Yeah herbal that was my thought as well. Imus brought up the following: Kind of funny. Williams seemed to be more than a little ticked off about it. Who knows.

The discussion about “Coke” when they used to be in those thick green colored 8oz. bottles, brought back some fond memories of my Grandmother (on my fathers side of the family).
When I was a “little tyke”, her and I would go shopping at Woolworth…(the old five & dime store). The best part was sitting at the “soda fountain” counter…and having a Coke with french fries.
She was really livid when they stopped selling Coke in those “little green” bottles…when they became obsolete. Coke DID taste better in those bottles!
Also the phrase “coke bottle glasses” (people that wore eye glasses as thick as those bottles) also brings a smile to my face. Good memories, from better times…
Thanks for reminding me of that subject…and making me smile today… all of you!
Well this figures. I guess her 15 minutes of fame will be in front of a judge. Another Idiot.

Bluesman Davis reported feeling better at hospital
By Jeremiah Horrigan
Times Herald-Record
October 25, 2008
MIDDLETOWN — Legendary bluesman Little Sammy Davis was reported in good condition Friday in Orange Regional Medical Center after suffering what friends said was a mild stroke last weekend.
A friend of Davis’, Barbara O’Brien, manager for Levon Helm Studios, said Davis has been undergoing rehabilitation at the medical center.
“He’s doing fine. There’s a little paralysis on the right side of his face and a little weakness on his right side,” she said Friday.
Davis, who is 79 years old, is “ready for action and can’t wait to get back to work,” she said.
A spokeswoman for the medical center could not comment any further on the details of Davis’ hospitalization, citing state and federal privacy laws.
Davis, a world-class harmonica player, has performed with such masters as Pinetop Perkins, Ike Turner and Albert King. He and his band, Midnight Slim, have been the house band for the “Imus in the Morning” radio program.

Last Post, Donald Inks stated, whoever is whispering in Imus’s ear, needs to stop. I agreed, and used a Ricky Bobby quote, about Tuff Love.

My husband he isn’t into apologizing. He has told me before, if I said it, I meant to say it, and if someone doesn’t like it, they can pound sand. An aside, my husband knows better then to make comments about Black Women’s hair
He is going to be home before the election. My husband is Catholic, no he wouldn’t wear a “hairshirt” I can hear him now, skrew that shit. There is a saying “you have to learn to live with, what you can’t rise above”
I do miss him, do you remember when Happy Yankee -Retired Air Force, commented on Imus Truth, She commented to Tayrn, “I have fielded enough crap in my day, to know when someone is whining for attention” That really made me miss my husband, he sounds a lot like that.
