Prostate Cancer can be much more serious depending on variables like your PSA, Gleason Score and Staging. Certainly what Imus has at his age is probably no big deal. However, 30,000 men die a year FROM prostate cancer and not just with it.

The really nasty thing about Prostate Cancer is that when it moves it normally turns into Bone Cancer which is a very painful and horrible way to go. That is why Imus mentioned he had a complete Bone Scan. First thing they do. The other thing is a test for bladder cancer which occurs in about 5% of men with prostate cancer. Nasty little test that involves a little camera up the….. never mind.

Anyhow, new surgical techniques and more specialized targeted radiation treatments ( IMRT ) have made significant gains in reducing impotence problems. Studies show that an immediate dosage of Viagra after either surgery or radiation helps quite a bit.

Another form of treatment is hormone therapy which is usually reserved for advanced cases. Prostate Cancer is highly dependent on hormones for growth. By stopping hormone production through the use of drugs, Prostate Cancer is essentially frozen in it’s tracks for a period of time. Unfortunately, the drugs only last for a couple of years or so before they lose their effectiveness.
