Media Matters regularly criticizes Don Imus by taking out of context the ongoing thought process Imus has with the audience. This thought process can last days, weeks and even months. For example, Media Matters picks up on Imus proclaiming Bill Clinton to be .. a fat, low rent hillbilly”. However, Media Matters conveniently neglects Imus’ thoughtful moments of consideration of Hillary Clinton and Barrack Obama candidacy and fitness for office which followed.
Here Media Matters targets Imus regarding Bill Clinton observations;
IMUS: And here’s what you have to remember about Bill Clinton; you can’t forget this.
CHARLES McCORD (news anchor): Yeah?
IMUS: This is a fat, low-rent hillbilly —
McCORD: [laughing] Yes.IMUS: — who was getting BJs from an intern in the Oval Office in the White House who was about the age of his daughter. This is a fat boy who, you know, when he sits down with Chris Wallace, Chris can’t punch him because the Secret Service is there. But the — so he’s just a, I mean, I don’t get that.
Media Matters lays in the weeds scrutinizing the I-Mans every word. MMFA steadily building a collection of Imus critiques with carefully edited audio clips and transcripts such as the one above. “Imus Opines” are presented by MMFA as literal attacks on the Clintons.
Nowhere in MMFA commentary is the satiric nature of the performance discussed or even mentioned. Figurative descriptions are cast aside with metaphors duplicitously mischaracterized.
Missing from MMFA is balanced critique as part of an ongoing dialouge Imus does provide Clinton positives.
Imus acknowledged that there must be something good on about the Clintons when speaking with James Carville on 1/23/2008, regarding the Las Vegas debates (@6:10)
Imus: Every time I think Hilary Clinton is satan (which of course I do). I say to Deirdre but Carville must know something.
Imus reviewed the Democratic Los Angeles Debates with Craig Crawford on 2/1/2008. Crawford describes the debates as the worse sort for the media, being substantive and cordial. The then went on to have this exchange (@4:40);
Imus:Still think she is satan and all that (Laughing). But I could vote for either one or the other, if I were a Democrat.
Crawford:You seem to be indicating under some circumstances, under some drug induced state you could vote for Hillary! Is that what I heard?
Imus: I could vote for either one of them. I’d be more likely to vote for him…
