Imus with Maureen Dowd who provides analysis of Hillary Clinton’s speech at the Democratic Convention, Michelle Obama at the Convention, Barack Obama and speculates on Bill Clinton prior to his DNC address. Remember Tim Russert (8/27/08)
Imus: There’s so much drama to almost everything you do, including your columns.
Maureen: Worked my way through college in the box office at Catholic University so maybe I picked something up there.
Maureen: You know I have been to a lot of conventions. Had never been to one like this because it’s not all about the person being nominated. It’s about the person not being nominated, it’s pretty wild.
Imus: You wrote there is so much anxiety in Denver. One senses it at 330 miles away or 3000 miles watching it on TV
Maureen: I’m really shocked I know that the Democrats If they can self destruct, they will! If they can fight themselves to death and do everything wrong they will. In this case having live through two excruciating losses basically by 30,000 votes the last time and one Florida County, the time before, you’d just think that. You know there’s something about hungry, it’s better then the finest french cook. You’d think that they would just be so hungry and so determined not to self destruct but they aren’t. They just like visibly self destructing.
Imus: I don’t understand why they invite every loser they nominated who couldn’t get it done to these conventions! Even the ones who got elected and were miserable failures like Jimmy Carter . Then you wonder where’s Gore, where’s Kerry?
Maureen: Don’t worry, Gore’s coming!
Imus: What did you think of Senator Clinton’s speech last night?
Maureen: I thought it was the speech of a lifetime. Thought she was amazing. The problems? She and her husband have been have been such a public melt down. Hillary has been kind of bringing Obama to his knees on the roll call vote and whether she will release her delegates.
She doesn’t have the right to release them, they don’t belong to her. This whole roll call thing, by now no one believes her.
Everyone knows that the speech is about her and her desire to win in 2012. It isn’t about Barack. It was a great speech. Unfortunately it has the effect of reminding everyone maybe she should’ve been the nominee because she will take it to McCain.
Obama for the last two weeks or more has been so innervating. He has the pattern where he’s energizing and kind of goes limp. Then everybody will come out, it happened during the primary too when his fundraisers came out and asked “what’s wrong why aren’t you fighting?”. He’ll start fighting then he will go limp again.
Yeah it’s a a great speech but did it help? I’m not so sure.
Imus: Here we have — Michelle Obama speaking the other night regardless of who one is going to vote or for or one’s political sentiments. I’m thinking in my lifetime I remember when black women had to sit in the back of the bus. Here we have an African American woman addressing the Democratic National Convention. Her husband has a fifty/fifty shot at becoming President. That’s not a bad face for this country to show the world regardless of where one’s coming from I wonder why there wasn’t some comment about that?
Maureen: I think we kind of get used to the idea, you have to keep reminding yourself. It’s hard to capture. Even to put into words. What an amazing night that was, an astonishing trajectory.
For the times or whatever I think it’s hard to keep the wonder and the stories. When Obama came to the convention eight years ago he was such a nobody his credit card barely worked when he tried to rent a car. And yet he talks the clerk into giving him credit. Just the whole trajectory of this story.
Those little girls, are just! I have a friend who produced the Cosby Show he emailed me and said “those girls are as cute as Huxtable little girls, they’re just so adorable”. I mean I it was the main thing pride.
The problem, this party is in civil war. The Democrats are kind of tearing themselves apart. The ones I talked to afterwards were worried. Did her green dress clash with the blue set? Should Obama have had on a tie? You know instead of being concerned with what they should be. They were obsessed with Carville and his reaction “they blew it, there was no message”. Former Clinton people were calling around saying “you have to shut Carville down”. That’s what they’re obsessive about, not about what a wondrous moment.
Imus: Well Carville was right, aside from the wondrous moment.
Maureen: Teddy Kennedy’s speech and Michelle Obama’s speech were so emotional they needed something in between. Somebody like Strickland, you know kicking McCain’s butt.
Imus: Who knows what what Bill Clinton’s going to do? He can’t possibly stick to the script they gave him can he?
Maureen: No and everyone knows he’s sulking at the Brown Palace Hotel. All the Clinton people are there and they are all going to leave after Bill’s speech They’re not going to stay for Obama. It’s such a diss its only one more day. He’s in a rage, he’s never gonna get over this, that mood kind of permeates. Where Obama went wrong remember that interview he gave, he said Bill Clinton had not had a transformative presidency like Ronald Reagan’s. It’s over there is nothing he can say take that back. Bill Clinton is just so angry, it’s all about him. He is a clinical narcissist. Obama is very controlling, there’s never any drama. Bill Clinton has turned this week into this huge dysfunction. Which is just what he has to do, he can’t stop himself.
Imus: Is this a good idea to have this big rock concert there’s with Bruce and Bon Jovi?
Maureen: A lot of Democrats are saying it’s not a good idea. Democrats are so self destructive. Their take on Ronald Reagan is he could draw great crowds and give a galvanizing speech with a positive saying. Democrats have internalized this, with Hillary’s saying enough with the big rallies, the pretty words! McCain picked that up, now they’re saying well gosh. I was at dinner the other night with some democratic congressmen. They were saying okay, this one last big speech but then he can’t do it anymore! It’s all part of the “messiah worship me” thing that they want him to get away from.
Imus: I don’t know why I think of you every time I think of Tim Russert. I had an ongoing email relationship with him for a long time. Sometimes I don’t erase all my stuff. I looked at the last email I got from him which was about this stupid record we are doing for the ranch. Actually got tears in my eyes. Tough to get over that, isn’t it?
Imus: I’m missing him every morning. Tim was so excited about the election and it’s like he had gotten a red flyer for Christmas. You could tune into him and he would tell you in one minute exactly everything you needed know.
