Imus Still Going One Year After the ‘Blacklash’
Jeff Bercovici reporting for Condé Nast on Imus’ Anniversary Show
Talking about the milestone this morning with Karith Foster and Tony Powell — two African-American comedians he brought on to insulate himself from charges of racism — the I-man fell prey to a wee Freudian slip, asking them if they had encountered any “blacklash” after throwing their lots in with him. (He quickly corrected himself.)
Bercovici also reported;
- The Anniversary Show featured 1/2 hour sponsorships including appearances. (Explains that Audi Guy on-air, Imus seemed to be in love with his voice.)
- There was an invitation only viewing party for the Imus family of advertisers at the Rainbow Studio. (Explains the references to Imus’ “corpulent sales staff”. Is anyone buying genius salesman Bob Gelb as being big boned?)
- Imus is now on 50 Stations which is more then the 47 he was on with WFAN. (Thought Imus crossed this threshold long ago.)
- Morning Time slot is driving greater revenue then Curtis and Kuby had. (No surprise) Read|More
ChanX CliffsNotes
Imus’ guest selection for the Anniversary Show (all power rotation guests) was superior. Guests included Alexis Glick who is an Anchor and Vice President of Business News at I-Sponsor FOX. Political Pundit Mary Matalin who along with her husband James Carville were Imus stalwarts during the bad days. Rounding out the guests on the big anniversary show was Comedian and Social Commentator Dick Gregory, who has become an I-Fav over the past year.
Imus read a touching email to the entire cast from Carol Foster congratulating the Imus program on the one year anniversary. Carol is Karith’s mother and a member of the NABJ . K-Mom noted how surprised she was by the number of her friends who listen to and commented on the program to her.
Mike, good pick — thanks.
It’s very gratifying to see the show doing as well as it is after only a year. Certainly the ad revenue thing is very telling. I thought the Boiler dude was pretty funny this morning. CBS/WFAN must be banging their heads now that their competition is that 13 year old girl like Craig Carton.
I was a bit amused watching Imus almost get teary eyed reading that letter from Karith’s mom. I guess he must have a relationship with Karith most of us don’t get — I certainly don’t. I mean she is awful —- obviously he doesn’t think so and it is, after all, his bat and ball.
The show, however, is getting a bit stale and Imus is sounding a bit —- old. It needs to pick up a bit somehow and some new stuff needs to happen. Rob can only be funny so often doing the same characters all the time. Tony is funny at times, but hardly ever contributes and well Karith is Karith —- painful.
I don’t think the RFD thing is working. So far I’ve seen one sporadic ad for an electronic pest thing. All other ads are promos for RFD programming, etc. Oh yeah they also run lots of “flashback” stuff from previous Imus interviews.
I do hope the new “Imus News Hour” works. Certainly a great idea and worth a try. If it does work, it will be a huge boost for the show —– at least in the WABC market.
Only the best for IITM for the next year and beyond.
Thank you, Skiwolf …I’m glad you liked the selection. Bob Seeger has his own wonderful way of telling a story …and it’s got a good beat and you can dance to it (if you’re so inclined).
I’ll agree with you partially, Karith is Karith …but (for me, anyway) only sometimes painful …and sometimes funny. Tony (minus the Paul Harvey routine) is OK.
I missed about half the show this morning, so I didn’t hear the Boiler dude …but I did hear the “blacklash” Freudian slip and immediately started laughing loud enough to scare the cat and annoy my wife (it doesn’t get any better than that).
I was fielding a lot of phone calls and e-mails this morning (I work at home) so, even though I was in front of this computer all day, I only managed to listen to the show (and most of the shows in the last couple of months) in a disjointed, hit-and-miss fashion. I also missed the part about Karith’s mom’s letter.
I wish I could see the show again. I liked watching it on TV …but I guess I’ll have to be satisfied with listening online …I’m getting used to it …I guess.
Opps! Guess O’Reilly didn’t like the “shower” comment Imus made with Alexis Glick. Thin skinned Bill has canceled his Friday appearance. Too funny.
No Spin O’Reilly sensitive? Go figure…

Was THAT dreck the other day an ANNIVERSARY program??!! I shut it off after Imus read that sappy e-mail from Karith’s mom. It is a habit I am doing more and more given the current program. It is, as Imus himself would say ” awful”. I still listen for something funny from Rob. Bartlett’s way too talented to stay silent most of the program and the other two sound like they are there not by choice. Tony sounds surly and karith…is so not funny she killed the best bit from Thanksgiving: The annual Imus invite from Charles McCord. THAT did it! I now listen to ESPN, where no one is afraid to step on toes.

Oh my Lord, this is terrible, this is Contessa Brewer. Thank The Lord, that Imus and Crew are not at MSNBC anymore…After viewing this, which one of us believes that anyone at MSNBC batted an eyelash at NHH? This reeks.

Ree, MessNBC people always played it like Imus was the abusive out of control personality. Turns out the I-Man was just defending himself and his crew…
ChannelXRFR,
I am not the biggest Constessa Brewer fan but after watching that video, I have sympathy for her because of the environment she has to work in. No wonder Imus praises 77WABC and RFD TV. Is it fair to say Steve Capus is setting the tone -morale at MSNBC by allowing this to go on? I am not naive, grown ups use language, I do all the time. The above was abusive. I was discussing this with Marty Davis- Chickaboomer, she thinks the producer was probably fired immediately “because of leak through” otherwise I guess nothing would have happened.
This from 24/6:
“Disclaimer: This video is a fake. I was being a charlatan, a mountebank by adding my own voice. In other words, this video is a phony, it is not genuine, it has been concocted.”

Soooo… the “blacklash thing” turned out to be some clump of mascara hanging off Karith’s eye? Could that be seen on the TV? Sorry I missed that.
LOL…23/6.
Sorry.
It seems this was a well perpetrated hoax. 😉
Also, note the “original” post date at 23/6 of the clip in question:

From Rush Limbaugh: “The Banking Queen” Barney Frank.
Now can you imagine if Imus had done this. I found this laugh out loud funny. Enjoy!
Pat Buchanan this morning was talking about the Detroit auto companies, says he likes his 11 year old us built vehicles. Reveals he has roots in the auto industry with both he and his father having worked for a Buick/Cadillac dealer. Pat position is that it is important for GMAC survive so the company can continue to finance cars. GMAC at one time was the dominant financer of GM auto loans and leases. Today GMAC finances 6% of the automakers car loans requiring a credit score of 700 and above and has exited the leasing business altogether. GMAC also provides financing for dealer inventories as well as residential mortgages. OUCH!
Here’s the problem GM sold a 51% stake to Cerberus Cerberus Capital Management in 2006. That’s right the same private equity firm which owns Chrysler. Now the company has significantly cut back loan operations leaving GM without a “house banker” which has significantly impacted sales to dealers and consumers.
Imus likes to ask about the quality of GM cars. One of the reasons GM cited for discontinuing leases was the residual value of GM autos does not hold up. In other words the value of an GM auto 3 years after purchase (striping away advertising and promotional bias) provides an indication as to the overall marketability and quality of the manufacturers offer. Regarding GM the market has spoken. BTW foreign auto companies have not backed off their lease programs!
The “Joe & Mika” radio show debuted on WABC today. Seems adequately listenable. I’m not sure what’s the point of them on the radio in addition to three hours on television. But since I don’t watch MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” because you-know, I don’t mind not touching the dial on WABC for another hour or two after Imus.
ChanX:
“Now the company has significantly cut back loan operations leaving GM without a “house banker” which has significantly impacted sales to dealers and consumers.”
Interesting point, and that GMAC did not provide ONE lease agreement this past month…
“GMAC, General Motors’ financing arm, did not write a single lease last month. It financed just 6 per cent of GM’s retail sales, down from almost half a year ago.”
http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/53ff63e2-c48b-11dd-8124-000077b07658.html
Apparently GMAC also floorplans; not only cars but also boats and trailers. That well is dry; so a luxury item that would suffer anyway is further stunted by no credit.
Actually GMAC is now a private company 51% owned by Cerberus Capital Management.
“GMAC aims to be the MAC Daddy of global finance firms. With operations in about 30 countries, GMAC offers financing to General Motors dealerships and their customers (and has begun diversifying to include other dealer franchises). GMAC also has been one of the largest mortgage issuers and servicers in the US through its Residential Capital subsidiary. GMAC Insurance offers vehicle service contracts and home and auto coverage. Its commercial finance arm offers financing to middle-market businesses, as well as factoring and accounts receivable financing. GMAC was founded in 1919.”

When I worked in Finance in an Auto Dealership GMAC financed not only General Motors cars but also Fords, Suzuki’s and Hyundais.
Other than Ford Motor Credit, they were the leading lender. Though I did have 4 other banking institutions to use.
Some were with Full Recourse. Others Non-recourse. If interested I will explain.
WABC finally got around to putting up a page for the Imus in the Morning News Hour with Charles McCord Click|Here
Have been listening to Charles on my way to the gym. The program is structured as a news channel with 10 minute news blocks featuring national and local news, sports with traffic and weather on the “7’s”. In the NY market Imus News Hour competitors are WCBS Newsradio 880 “Traffic & Weather Together on the 8s, and 1010 Wins “You give us 22 minutes, we’ll give you the world”. Both are stalwarts in the New York market and from a ratings perspective are market leaders.
The Imus News Hour is an opportunity to steal some share from both WCBS 880 and WINS 1010 while providing a crisp intro into Imus.
Best of luck to Charles&Co.
Also, I thought that rodeo guy this morning got his butt kicked pretty good by the I-man. Wasn’t to long ago Imus was just too happy to have a sponsor, now he’s smacking the sponsors around!
Speaking of sponsors, with GM back in I-Fold I can bring the GMC truck to the dealer for service and maybe visit the show room for the “Red Tag Sale”.

Hi Harley! Nice to see ya! We go back along way on this site. This is our Jester Imus’s site where the ‘Groundlings’ {I-Fans & defenders} could gather & rant or praise. I don’t post often nowadays but I DO read the daily postings. Harley, I’ve always loved the genius of your Avatar! 🙂
St Doms, Imus has been under the weather lately in fact he took today off to help recovery. Bernie sat in for the Iman over at WABC. RFD has a split screen thing going on so they showed Bernie, although I think it would work better if Bernie was sitting in the RFD studio. Would be great to have more interaction between Bernie, Chuck, Tony, Rob and Karith. BTW Bernie is great at tweaking Karith.
I just sent Imus an e card to imusonair@gmail.com

This is an incredible story of bravery and sacrifice in the NE bad lands of Afghanistan.
God Bless America!
As Ford and Staff Sgt. John Wayne Walding returned fire, Walding was hit below his right knee. Ford turned and saw that the bullet “basically amputated his right leg right there on the battlefield.”
Walding, of Groesbeck, Tex., recalled: “I literally grabbed my boot and put it in my crotch, then got the boot laces and tied it to my thigh, so it would not flop around. There was about two inches of meat holding my leg on.” He put on a tourniquet, watching the blood flow out the stump to see when it was tight enough.
Then Walding tried to inject himself with morphine but accidentally used the wrong tip of the syringe and put the needle in this thumb, he later recalled. “My thumb felt great,” he said wryly, noting that throughout the incident he never lost consciousness. “My name is John Wayne,” he said.
From above link,

http://getoffmyphone.blogspot.com/2008/12/l-word.html
Imus sounds AWFUL, OLD, and like an OLD LESBIAN. He should stay home until he’s better and let Bernie take over. Today was painful at best. He’s starting to make Paul Harvey sound young.
Did someone lift Imus’ cowboy hat? That stocking cap made him look like a mental patient. He should just wear a hoody tomorrow.
Frank Rich bemoaning the lack of news reporting. Hey Frank take a look at the front page of the NYT sometime. Reporters no longer dig for facts they opine! Come to think of it the NYT may someday cut back on the OP-ED pages realizing the duplication between front page reporting and the back pages opining.
Get Well Soon Imus, Here are three things you must do to get better.
http://www.rubberchickencards.com/content.php/action/play_card/id/51/
Imus is probably sick because for a year he has had to have the two black “PC guards” sitting on either side of him. The old Imus no longer exists – he has been murdered by the minorities – just to have to look at that woman’s hair is enough to make one sick. I have never seen Imus wear a hat so large that his face is not visible. I think he harbors a resentment that they have harnassed him with guards – who I hear are not a bit funny. I have tried and tried to watch this show but the new Imus is not what I want to see. We need out old Imus back, Bernie on camera, Larry back with his Kennedy skits back. I read on one of these blogs that Imus wondered how long will it take for the white comdians to joke about Obama. Why ask that – white comedians and black comedians have been making fun of the white presidents….perhaps there is an answer to his query – there are bumper stickers around here saying DON’T LET THIS BECOME AN OBAMANATION!!!! I think the crush on his personality by these two and the blacks who want to “get” him has taken its toll. He should retire – enjoy the settlement he got from CBS – try to teach his son some manners – and let Deirdre shine with her work. It is time he realizes the old Imus has been killed forever.
Amen: R. I. P. – Imus of the old Imus in the Morning Show. Gone. RIP. Wicked sad.
StDoms, Bernie sat in for Imus today, even did interviews. The Alexis Glick interview was awesome. Alexis is a New Yorker and clearly gets it. Chuck jumped in and asked several questions.
The Bernie-Alexis interview is available @ WABC Click|Here
At the end of the interview Bernie sent a shout out to her father “Mr. Glick” he missed and hit the “F-in-Law”. Next time send the shout out to MR. DONNELLY. That’s right, Ms Glick is an Irish lass! How about that StDoms?
Channel: I thank-you for the update. I do love the guys! Re: Ms. Glick – Ah! A nice Irish lass is she – herself. 🙂
Imus is not dead at all. He’s sick. It’s that simple.
Now
My Christmas Card to You-2008
==========================
Be sure to read the description to the right.
I don’t think it’s “that simple” at all. I think Imus is done. Maybe not physically, but certainly mentally. The show sucks and Imus is way beyond showing his age, sad as that might be.
Even before becoming ill, Imus has showed his age or if not that at least signs of just not giving a shit and being bored or something. He often loses track of questions he wants to ask of guests and just seems to out of it in general. I’m beginning to wonder if a bit of dementia is starting to set in.
Frankly, this stunt he pulled the last couple of days with that stocking cap was just sad. I mean he both looked and sounded like an old fool. I felt sorry for him and kept wishing Charles would just yank him off the set.
I wish him and the show the best. However, it’s clear the best days are long gone.
Sometimes SkiWolf we have to take the bad with the good.
He is still succesful whether you like the show or do not like the show.
This is an opinion of mine. Please do not take it personally.
But the I-Man has not been well for some weeks now. He needs to rest. As far as I know he is leaving for the Ranch after Friday. Though I do believe he will be broadcasting from there when he has healed.
To me he still keeps the place together even when he goes on his little rants.
Merry Christmas!
Ski: Re: your reference to Imus looking like an ‘old fool’ brought to my mind’s eye Imus as our own Fool. As the Shakespearen witty politically astute Will Summers – Fool – Court Jester to Henry the 8th. A King’s Fool who was allowed to say anything in pointed jest to the King & Court & still keep his head. Our Imus is/has been our own American Jester. Imus – the best at parrying with the famous & infamous & the great & the good & the renegade of modern America. Oh! The Glory Days! The halcyion days of Imus in the morning MSNBC from 6Am – 9Am every day. Gone. I miss Imus’s edgy wit something Wicked! {No, not MSNBC – I mean Imus} I’m sad to say – RIP the old Imus in the Morning show. I wish he would get back on my local Time-Warner TV cable network. Channel: Please DO keep me updated! 🙂
To me stdom, the problem is that Imus is indeed showing his age. Has nothing to do with his recent illness. He often shows a lack of interest, loses his train of thought and just in general doesn’t seem to give a shit. My observation.
The show is severally lacking in energy and enthusiasm. It’s very telling in my opinion.
Anyhow, you obviously have a computer. Do you have speakers? If so you can listen to Imus on the internet. I’m sure others have explained this before, however. Not hard to do.
Ski: I do have a computer & when Imus 1st came back on-air- I tried to listen……but the thrill was gone. Just as you said – he ain’t what he used to be. I saw it when he went on air to apologize for NHH & he said ‘I said a very bad thing but I’m not a bad person.’ Imus LOOKED drained. I thought to myself – sheesh ‘Imus – don’t apologize for being YOU. Jaysus! I knew then that it was never going to be the same. RIP IITM. Still, I DO like to know whats going on with the show & like to read the postings here on this site. RFD has done nothing for the I-Fan base.
I personally do not agree with SkiWolf or StDomgirl on “IMUS”.
He isn’t 95 years old. And as far as RFD-TV. Invest in Direct TV to watch him.
My finances do not permit me to do this. The internet or radio version is fine for me. And many people here do receive the 9AM hour from me that I do every day.
Just ask Bella or Ree or Frec.
I have RFDTV which, if anything, is more painful than listening on the radio. There is no emotion, no energy, no anything. Everyone just sits there like lumps, including Imus.
No he is not 95 — he is a very old 67 and showing it more every day.
And no Bruce, that is not me posting on ImusTruth. That is probably one of your wachnut friends having fun. I wouldn’t have anything to do with that site as I choose to not have anything to do with you.
Birds of a feather…….
Well my apologies then. Because they took your post here, and duplicated it on Imus Truth.
And Imus is 68 not 67. He was born in 1940.
Also without sounding condescending. I don’t have any friends at Imus Truth. Just nutty people that impersonate others, or who have no name at all.
I would look into that post if I were you.
And geez! I am not a part of the “WackNuts”. I protect and defend Imus and the people I truly recognize by their writing.
Merry Christmas to you too.
Col Jack in Imus’ seat today, the only person who could sit in that seat.
Bernie is developing a bigger role with increased gravitas in interviews as he stands in for the Iman. It’s starting to work between Bernie and Charles, both professionals they play off of each other well.
Sure hope Imus is alright, lingering illness is seldom good.
Merry Christmas to you Bruce…
Thank you Channel,
Hope I didn’t step on any toes.

I, like Chanx, am extremely concerned about the Iman’s health. He seemed so healthy when he returned, but has been struggling for some months now. This is the second bout with pneumonia and high fevers this fall/winter. While he deserves points for showing up, it would be impossible for someone to do a good job while that ill. Just think about trying to get up off the couch with the flu, chills, high fever and belabored breathing. Hopefully this break will allow him to recover and return in grand style.
Unlike you Ski, I felt the show had become edgier recently with Bernie on screen and participating more as well as several pot shots at Karith which oddly enough spurred repartee that made her show better than usually.
However, I find the Joe and Mika addition to WABC a bit odd. I hope it is not leading to a simulcast deal preempting Imus. He is so loyal. Is there any chance he would move to Fox Biz?
Also a bit concerning is the lack of guests that move in the Obama clique; although the return of Alter may signal a thawing in some circles. Maybe Imus is wending his way towards more variety (since Joe is doing the old Imus). The recent spate of live performances has been very entertaining. Maybe Delbert will come back on after the cruise with some new talent.
Enuff!
Merry Christmas to all and a toast to a Prosperous and Happy New Year.
Interesting to read all the different opinions on Imus (as of late). I would have to concur with those that say Imus has lost his edge (and having Directv can watch AND listen). The energy has just been lackluster at best. Imus is not physically well either, that is a fact.
The show (to me and my wife at least) has devolved into almost apathy. It is painful to watch. His constant sucking up to FOX is glaring, and to paraphrase Kinky Friedman from a few weeks ago, Imus doesn’t do things without an agenda. Imus took offense to that statement by Kinky…but I think Kinky hit a raw nerve.
In a way, it is sad. I honestly believe he wanted to go to FOX (originally) and was then led to op out to RFD for the television aspect of simulcasting.
I do hope Imus does recover, but this is the second time within the past year he has battled Pneumonia…which is not a good sign.
My advice? Imus should quit being so PC and especially so P.W.’d, and tell Deirdre to stuff all her “cleaning and greening” of the Iman. Let him eat a nice juicy steak, and some other real food. That might help. 😉
On another unrelated subject, this is well worth the watch on the economic future front from someone who knows what he is talking about. His take, in short,…what will be the telling signs between where we are now (in a recession) and where we may wind up (a depression)…and why.

Best of health to all, and Merry Christmas.
…One last thought:
I have always hoped that Imus and crew would do a “re-enactment” of “A Christmas Carol”…as they did so long ago….only in today’s’ cast?
Imus: Scrooge
Chuck: Cratchit
Rob: The Merchant (asking for donations for the poor)
Karith: Ghost of Christmas Past
Tony: Ghost of Christmas present
Bernie: Ghost of Future Christmas
Deirdre: Beth
and last but not least,
Lou: Tiny Tim
…alas… ’tis but a pipe dream. 🙂
Again, Merry Christmas, and a “Happier” New Year!
Be well, all.
Donald, I could not agree more.
It seems some took my previous comments as an indication of performance since Imus became ill. That is not the case at all.
The show, as you so aptly put it, “has been lackluster at best…..and has devolved almost into apathy”.
Actually, the show the last few days with Imus off has been better in my opinion. Except for Karith and Tony who really add nothing to he show. Bernard, Charles and Warner seem to do real well together.
Lastly, it is clear a good rare steak at one of the many famous NY Steak Houses would do a world of good. Along with a baked potato, tons of butter and sour cream and of course creamed spinach.
He seems to have been craving a hotdog……
Imus has not lost his music touch. Hayes Carll website is featuring his appearance on the program and his performance of “I’m Grateful For Christmas This Year” with a free download! hayescarll.com Click|Here
Can’t believe no one has put together a YouTube on this song…
Channel and All,
According to RFD’s newsletter Imus will not be on TV until January 5, 2009.
Maybe that’s good for his health. Do not know about the Radio end yet.
New Post.. Imus Country Christmas!!!
